German Shepherd Rescue Las Vegas - Welcome!

German Shepherd Rescue Las Vegas

has saved nearly 1200 dogs since our inception in 2003.

Each dog's story is unique and many are heart-breaking, but in every case there is a common thread: an animal that deserves a second chance at life and a permanent, loving home needs us.

We'd like to share these special stories with you.

Lovely LolaLola, a 5 year old purebred German Shepherd, was forgotten at the local area high kill animal shelter. She was adopted by a loving home that was going to be perfect for her. After the family brought her home they discovered that Lola didn't get along with their cats. They still proceeded to take Lola to a local Vet office to have a check up.

This loving family was heartbroken to hear that Lola needed an expensive dental surgery. She had been neglected for so many years that all her K-9 teeth were worn, cracked and had several cavities. She could barely eat her food because she was in so much pain. The Vet also said that Lola would need expensive hip x-rays to see what each hip looked like. The vet said that she either had arthritis or Hip Dysplasia. This poor family wanted nothing more than a loving animal to bring into their home. With all the medical expenses they were going to face they called German Shepherd Rescue Las Vegas for help. They would not return her to the high kill Lola gets a second chance to live a good long life filled with love instead of neglect. shelter in fear that she would be put down. This family was very upset to surrender to the Rescue, but knew that we would take care of her and find her a loving home without cats.

Since bringing Lola into our program she has had her dental Surgery and her canine teeth were removed to eliminate her pain and any further damage. Her hips were x-rayed and although she has slight joint disease she is health.

Lola's future: She will have to have soft foods for the remainder of her healthy years. She will need a good diet and exercise to strengthen her hip muscles and joints. She will be adoptable soon. We are now taking donations to help cover the cost of Lola's dental surgery and hip x-rays totaling $350.00. (Donations are tax-deductible and easily made through Paypal.  Bless you!)

Gypsy hit by a car with compound fractures to both left legs.  UPDATE 8/30/08   GREAT NEWS!!!!  Gypsy has been adopted by a wonderful family that loves her as much as we do!  Congratulations Gypsy girl!

UPDATE 4/19/08   Gypsy Gypsy's xray - back left leg was lost for two days and hit by a car.
She'd just whelped 10 pups two weeks prior to her accident. We contacted her owner who claims to do good by training service dogs for disabled Vets. In this case and several incidents before this guy has proven to be a huge let down and compulsive liar. We are trying our hardest to find the new born pups but have had no luck. This man went to the vets office where his poor dog lay in tremendous pain and his response is that he can't take her because of the bill. Prior to this he said that his 'foundation' would be able to pay for the bill.

Gypsy is now stranded at the vets office with two compound fractures in both left legs, one front and one back.  She needs surgery. We are now contacting various charitable organizations to try and find the funds to help this poor sweet girl. With your prayers and whatever donation you can spare, we will be able to make this happen.

UPDATE 4/21/08  We have now gained ownership of Gypsy. It was a long ugly process but is done now. We were also informed that the puppies are still alive but we're still trying to determine their location. Our Vet has looked over Gyspy's x-rays and has determined that the case is too complicated.  He can not do the necessary surgery. She will need an orthopedic specialist who will use plates and screws to fix her legs. So she will be moved to the Las Vegas Referral Center first thing in the morning April 22. The estimated cost of the procedure is roughly $5000.00.

UPDATE 4/22/08   Gypsy had both her surgeries today and received a positive post op report from the doctor. The bones in both legs were repaired with a series of plates, rods and screws. The Doctor said that the post-surgery x-rays look wonderful and that he is very happy  with the outcome. She will remain at the clinic until Thursday but her bones will heal and the lovely Gypsy is on her way to recovery. Oh - one more bit of positive news...the bill should be $2500-$3000, not the $5000 we were quoted two days ago.

Gypsy's post-op xrays - plates and rods and screws hold her bones together while they heal.

Gypsy has had successfull repair of both front and back legs and is in recovery.

Gypsy has had successfull repair of her compound fractures and is in recovery. UPDATE 4/24/08  Gypsy is out of the hospital and in a foster home to recover. She is doing really great and  is expected to make a full recovery. I was able to see her post-op x-rays and oh man she has a lot of metal now. They used a plate in both legs to hold the fracture together and then used screws to hold the plate in place. Finally they had to use rods to make sure that nothing moves and causes any problems while healing. Instead of the two fractures, she actually had three: a fractured radius, fractured ulna and fractured tibia. All were repaired.

Gypsy's recovery should be fairly short term. At 6 weeks she has to go back for more post-op x-rays but her total heal time should be approximately 2-4 months. Our objective now for Gypsy is to let her heal in a relaxed stress-free environment so that she can continue to recover. After that we will find her a wonderful forever home. Thanks all who helped along the way.  Without you this could not have been done and she would not have the promising life ahead of her she now enjoys.

UPDATE 8/30/08   GREAT NEWS!!!!  Gypsy has been adopted by a wonderful family that loves her as much as we do!  Congratulations Gypsy girl!

Gypsy healthy & happy now!
Today Gypsy is doing just fine and thanks each and every one of you
that sent prayers and donations towards her veterinary expenses.

Basha emaciated at only 42 pounds!Basha was found on Mt Charleston in mid January of 2008 by a wonderful lady who helps dogs that have been abandoned on the mountain. Like ffar too many dogs, Basha had simply been dumped to fend for herself- left there to survive on her own. Left to starve.  She had been unsuccessful at foraging for scraps to eat for about 6 or 7 weeks and was emaciated - just a bag of skin and bones.

When Basha arrived at the Vet's office she weighed in at no more than 47 pounds! For a full grown German Shepherd dog this is unheard of. She stayed at our vet's office for a week, on several medications and fluids to help her body recuperate and learn to accept nutrition again. They also did a complete work-up with several tests and x-rays to make sure that she was going to survive. Basha - healthy and happy now!

After being released from the vet's care Basha was welcomed in the home of our Vice President, Trish Duvall. Like any creature overcoming starvation, Basha was fed a number of small meals several times a day.... a special diet of Venison and Elk meat mixed with Potatoes and Carrots. In two weeks her weight had increased to nearly 60 pounds and she was beginning to look healthy again. She was being weighed every week to check her progress.

After the first 6 weeks in her recovery home, we noticed that she was walking a little abnormally. We made a visit to the Vet one more time where she was diagnosed with dual hip dysplasia. Basha is a wonderful German Shepherd and we will do all we can for her. Currently we are trying to raise funds to have at least one of her hips replaced. So that's the sad but happy story of Basha the mountain dog. She is healthy and happy and loves life and is currently still being fostered by Trish.

Justice had a severe gash that had not been treated for over 72 hours. 3-20-08  Animal Control was called to pick up a stray dog at a local tire shop. She was said to have been hit by a car.  When Justice was brought to the shelter she was badly injured with a huge gash all across her rump and was in tremendous pain.

Instead of Animal Control taking her to the Vet's office she had to wait for 72 hours in a kennel with just concrete to comfort her wound. They did put her on pain meds but that was it. After her 3 days and nights of misery, rescue was called in, whereupon we took her immediately to the vet's office.

When we arrived the vets said that it had been too long to be able to stitch her gash back together. But luckily for her, the vet did just that, and indeed was able to sew her hind end back together.  After a few days at the Vet’s, she has now come to her foster home.

Despite the delay attending to her wounds, Justice was stitched up.Upon her arrival, we were outdoors getting some much needed fresh air when her foster mom noticed something ..... she was covered in scars. In just the one area that had been shaved for the stitches, she has more than 20 old scars. And looking closer we  realized that she had a huge scar all the way around her neck and another large one behind her ear.

At 5 or 6 years old, this poor girl has not had that best life. Despite being told by animal control that she was a stray, we suspect that she was an abused shop dog. Her coat and skin were covered in oil and she just smells like a working tire shop. At this time Justice knows very much that she is loved and is very comfortable in her foster home. She is clean and healthy now.  She loves getting attention and laying her head in your lap. She does not, however, like loud noises or raised voices as she most likely has suffered beatings in her past.

Justice is safe and happy now.

A happy ever after for Justice!

Justice's wounds are healing nicely.
